About our client, a pivotal organization in coordinating emergency response
Our client is dedicated to protecting the public and supporting first responders in the field by delivering essential emergency communication services. The center serves as a vital link between residents in need and the police, fire and EMS personnel who respond. It also serves as the backup for 9-1-1 overflow calls throughout the county and provides pre-arrival medical instruction for several municipalities that operate their dispatch services.
About the project, refitting and upgrading a communications center
Our client’s communications center operates around the clock, with a team of highly trained professionals who work 24/7, 365 days a year, ensuring fast, coordinated, and accurate emergency response. As such, they required control room furniture that could support their workflow by adhering to strict ergonomic guidelines and ensuring that future technology needs could be integrated into the workstations.
About the solution, a modern and future proof public safety dispatch consoles
After an extensive design and consultative process, our client chose our TRANSIT Dispatch Console, because it met their specific needs and requirements and their commitment to excellence. The rollout of the 36 cockpit shaped dispatch consoles would take place in 2 phases, so as to reduce as much as possible the disruption of emergency services to the more than 30 county municipalities the center’s responsible for.
The ECC was to be equipped with 36 cockpit-shaped dispatch consoles, arranged in closed pods configuration. All of them connected using a heavy-duty wall system to route cables using electrical raceways, and to provide each user as well with some privacy and an immersive workstation.
The control consoles are designed to support all sorts of mission-critical accessories and technology requirements. They can be equipped with adjustable task lights, a focal adjustment system (to allow operators to adjust the depth of their monitors), etched glass panels, integrate cooling fans & heaters, a retractable monument system for easy access to power & data directly on the worksurface, and dedicated CPU enclosures underneath the workstation.
The TRANSIT Dispatch Console feature height adjustable worksurfaces made from HPL, supported by heavy duty actuators that can be controlled by an integrated keypad. In addition, these consoles integrate into their design cables raceways and cables chains to protect the cables while the workstation is in motion.
The height adjustability makes each console more versatile since they can be adjusted to fit many operators of different sizes and body types. So, one station can be shared by many dispatchers, and each one can save their preferred height settings using the integrated keypads.
To support the weight of the multi-monitor array, the workstations are built using a 12-gauge steel substructure that prevents the worksurfaces (made from high-pressure laminate) to bend over time. It also doubles as an organizational tool to route cables and protect the IT equipment housed underneath the dispatch consoles.
Storage solutions, designed for files, training documentation, office supplies and printers and scanners
To complement the workstations, the renovated control room also includes two variants of custom shelved storage cabinets (one with 2 shelves and second one with 5 shelves), measuring 36x36 inches, built from TFL Panels with MDF Core; which makes it resistant to stains, surface wear and scratching. It features a grommet opening to pass a cable for a printer and a scanner.
Built from the same materials but with a different purpose, the renovated control room also required a filing cabinet equipped with 2 drawers (24x36 inches).
And lastly, a stationary carrousel specifically designed for binders with a diameter of 36x36 and 2 levels of shelving. Placed at the center of the pods of dispatch consoles.
About the result, a renovated primary public safety answering point
Once the installation process was completed the staff at the emergency center got a chance to familiarize themselves with their new workstations. As of today, the 36 dispatch consoles are up and running, providing comfort and flexibility to the public safety telecommunicators working at the organization.
